What is causing water to drip onto and soak our air conditioning air filter?

We have a Carrier model #FB4BNF030. Water is dripping/leaking from somewhere inside the unit and soaking our air filter and, since our air filter hangs out of the until, water is also pooling on the floor in front of the unit. What could be the cause??

Chosen Answer:

You may have an extreme amount of humidity in your home and your AC’s evaporator is just “raining water” and flooding your filter, then that will drip to the floor instead of wicking down the evaporator coil into the condensation tray and then out to the drain.

Or, the evaporator is clogged with crud and needs cleaning. The clogged evaporator will cause icing and then that will leak down causing the filter to be soaked and drip on the floor.

Turn the unit off. Take the filter out and with a flash light look at the coils. If they are dirty, get a SOFT scrub brush and scrub down the coils. Get it as clean as you can, use a vacuum cleaner if you can. Put in a new filter.

If it continues, you may need a professional cleaning or possible topping off of Freon gas.
